Understanding of Language (Receptive Language)


  • Your child may benefit from Speech Pathology Intervention if he or she demonstrates any of the following:
  • Difficulty following directions
  • Isn’t sure about the relationships between words (e.g. opposites, categories)
  • Difficulties in understanding what people say
  • Frequently asks for repetition
  • Gets distracted easily when required to listen to information
  • Does not respond to questions appropriately
  • Has difficulty listening to short stories and answering simple questions about them
  • Has difficulty understanding words such as ‘if’, ‘because’, ‘when’, ‘until’
  • Can’t repeat sentences of varying length verbatim
  • Has attention difficulties
  • Takes extra time to process information


Use of Language (Expressive Language)


  • Your child may benefit from Speech pathology Intervention if he or she demonstrates any of the following:
  • Difficulty finding the right words
  • Has difficulty getting a message across
  • Jumbles the order of information
  • Has difficulty producing grammatically correct sentences
  • Becomes frustrated easily
  • Does not have a large vocabulary
  • Has not mastered grammatical structures such as tense or pronouns (e.g. they will go, he drew a cat, he/she)
  • Uses simplistic language
  • Does not use descriptive words
  • Does not ask a range of questions (e.g. when/where/what/who/how/why)
  • Is not fluent in his or her speech (e.g. may repeat a sound, a word or a phrase)
  • Needs extra time to work out what he or she wants to say
